Before I buy a fruit tree, how can I know if I will like the fruit?

Frequenting farmers' markets can be a great way to become familiar with regionally-adapted fruit varieties and learn what you like. But often, if you don't have family, friends or neighbors sharing fruit, to find your favorite varieties you have to be the pioneer, the adventurer, the tester. Nursery fruit descriptions can be useful guides, but, in addition to varying individual preferences, fruit quality depends as much on climate, conditions and cultural practices as it does on variety.
