Is mulching my fruit trees worth doing?

Mulching backyard fruit trees is absolutely worth doing; the difference can be dramatic. A thick layer of mulch makes it much easier to maintain consistent moisture in the root zone. It serves to buffer soil temperature during very hot and very cold spells. Mulch also provides a steady supply of nutrients as the organic matter decomposes, and it helps suppress weeds.
